The number of migrations is rising and rising. As reported, we had already received more than 56,000 asylum applications in August. And the pace continues into September. Even after the refugee crisis in 2015, security experts expect a new record this year.
The authorities register a real stampede, especially on the eastern border. In the “Krone” lecture, Chancellor Karl Nehammer sharply criticized the European Union.
Nehammer lacks strong border protection
“Austria is currently heavily burdened by illegal migration. The solidarity contribution we make in Europe is disproportionately high. Asylum policy has failed. There is still no strong protection of the EU’s external borders and the reality of the problem is being ignored,” the ÖVP leader clarified.
Meeting with Vučić and Orbán
The situation is exacerbated by the fact that many migrants are currently on the move without actually ever standing a chance of asylum in Europe. Austria is doing everything it can to protect itself. Nehammer: “Because if the Serbian and Hungarian borders are protected, our own border is also protected.”
That is why the Chancellor will meet Head of State Vučić and Hungarian Prime Minister Orbán at a Western Balkans summit in Serbia. “We finally need a new EU asylum system – that’s the only real and lasting solution. We need to stop the wrong migration policies,” the chancellor said.
