Interview with Eneko Andueza, General Secretary of the PSE-EE, on Radio Euskadi, October 5

Date:

After United We Can’s accusation against the PSOE of “disloyalty” for “hiding the surge in defense spending”, the general secretary of the PSE-EE opined that “this kicking” shows two things: “they have their homework not done or they lie”.

The image of unity that the Spanish government’s partners, PSOE and United We Can, set out to convey yesterday with the passing of the General State Budget Bill (PGE) for 2023 has not been slowly crumbling. The purple formation has accused the socialists of “hiding” the rise in Defense and making the rise “one-sided”. An allegation that the Secretary General of the PSE-EE, Eneko Andueza, does not understand and qualifies as “spades”. He believes that “United We Can is trying to incite a rage to” justify the approval of the bills.

Likewise, it also seems “excessive” that United We Can plans to “take credit for social spending”. “I see them in a constant effort to stick their heads out. It is very clear that if there is one party that is committed to the social majority in all governments of Spain, it is the PSOE,” he added.

interviewed in Radio Euskadic, the socialist leader has stressed that “we are faced with the most social budgets in history” and asked both the PNV and EH Bildu for “responsibility” when it comes to positioning their votes. “It is time to show responsibility, not who is the best in the art of scamming. Logically the changes will have to be negotiated and analyzed, but it is time to support most social budgets in this country. This government shows that , faced with the men in black and the budget cuts, there is another way to do politics,” he added.

When asked whether the PNV will take advantage of this situation to demand the transfer of pending transfers, Andueza said it does not seem appropriate to “link” budget negotiations to the transfers. As he has said, “budgets are a country-building exercise” and the conversations about competitions should be handled in a different space. In this sense, he stated that “the government of Spain has already indicated to the Basque government that it is time to open a new period for this debate”.

As for tax reform, the leader of the Basque socialists has argued that all tax measures should be progressive. “We are not here to make life easier for the rich. It is a matter of social justice. I have it very clear,” he clarified.

As for possible alliances after next year’s municipal and regional elections, Andueza sees no preconditions for a broad left-wing agreement with Elkarrekin Podemos and EH Bildu: “To have a left-wing alternative you have to have a left-wing project, and right-wing now the only project is that of the PSE. Podemos has no project and the only project of EH Bildu is that of sovereignty”.
