A shock moment for a construction company on Wednesday morning in the Tyrolean district of Kufstein: an excavator tore the pipe of a gas tank in Scheffau, causing a gas leak. Two buildings had to be evacuated. The fire brigade was able to prevent a serious explosion.
Large-scale operation around 8.30 am for the fire brigade of Scheffau, Elmau and the company fire brigade Sandoz Kundl! An excavator was deformed and tore a pipe from a natural gas tank at a construction site. Gas then escaped from the leak. “The workers immediately left the site and contacted us. We had to evacuate the two surrounding houses,” said Alexander Schulz, commander of the Scheffau volunteer fire service.
Delicate use and impending explosion
First, the Floriani disciples moisten the leak and the gas with water to lower the threshold values. “Only then could we expose and seal the gas tank,” explains Schultz. After more than an hour and a half, the danger was averted and the leak closed. The tank has been handed over to the responsible company.
The commander also confirms that the operation was not without danger: “There are two buildings within 15 meters, and the construction company was also on site. The danger was very great that something could have happened. It is difficult to estimate how extensive the damage would have been.”
