Syrian sources say Israel shelled the capital Damascus on Friday. The Defense Ministry said several missiles had been intercepted. Israeli missiles are also said to have been intercepted in the south of the country.
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Israeli attacks also targeted military installations near Damascus International Airport. In September, Israeli airstrikes near Damascus killed five soldiers. Since the start of the Syrian civil war in 2011, Israel has carried out hundreds of airstrikes against targets in Syria. They targeted positions of the Syrian army, Iranian troops or the Lebanese Hezbollah militia, which, like Iran, is affiliated with Syrian ruler Bashar al-Assad.
Israel rarely comments specifically on its air strikes in Syria. However, Israel has repeatedly stressed that it will not allow Iran to extend its influence to Israel’s borders.
