Borrell: ‘The war cannot end because of the fatigue of the West’

Head of European diplomacy defends support for Ukraine and a common front against Russia in a conflict that “enters a worrying and dangerous phase”

The European Union is working these days to approve the eighth package of sanctions against Russia, following the escalation of aggression against Ukraine. The illegal referendums in the occupied regions, the mobilization of 300,000 reservists and the nuclear threats are raising fears that the war is entering a new “more dangerous” phase, stressed the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, before the plenary session of the European Parliament . “The war cannot end because of the fatigue of the West. Our support for Ukraine must be unwavering, because its security is tied to ours.”

The High Representative has stressed that Europe has reduced its imports and exports to Moscow, which is stifling its economy and its ability to finance the war. “European energy dependence has been an important conditioning factor for our foreign policy towards Russia,” acknowledged Borrell. And it is that the continent imported about 41% of the gas it consumed from this country, an amount that has now been reduced to 7.5%.

The news of the battlefield “is good for Ukraine too,” with developments in the regions occupied by Russian troops. “Russia still has the numerical and fire superiority, but the Ukrainian armed forces are fighting in a very intelligent and agile way,” Borrell stressed. But with Moscow losing positions and feeling cornered, “we are entering a terrifying scenario of conventional war involving a nuclear force threatening to use this type of weapon.”

It is now that support for Ukraine is more important than ever and “it must be unwavering”, the High Representative insisted. “The war must be won in terms of ideas. Russia is defending a story that the effects of the war are due to European sanctions and it is creating a lot of confusion.” The Kremlin also hopes that winter and gas shortages will put pressure on European countries, their economies and households. “Putin believes that democracies are weak, that they will not survive the winter, austerity and high prices.”

Therefore, he said, European will and support for Ukraine must be stronger than ever. “Putin must give up his imperial ambitions and the war must ultimately bring peace, with Ukraine regaining its territorial integrity and sovereignty,” he stressed, adding that Europe will demand responsibility for war crimes. As long as the conflict lasts, «the EU will provide diplomatic and military aid to Kiev. It is no time to doubt. European society pays a price, but it is worth it,” he emphasized.
