Overview of the federal states – Van der Bellen’s triumphal march with one exception

Date:

The Hofburg election has been defeated. Alexander Van der Bellen more or less easily achieved an absolute majority in eight federal states – only in Carinthia did the defending champion receive less than 50 percent. An overview.

Only 44.4 percent for Alexander Van der Bellen, 25.5 for Walter Rosenkranz, 10.2 for Tassilo Wallentin – no, of course not the overall Austrian result of yesterday’s Hofburg elections, but the result of the most unusual federal state: Carinthia simply different!

Van der Bellen scored in the West
VdB also performed below average in the second southern state of Styria. The incumbent in the West in particular scored well on this. In Tirol and Vorarlberg, Van der Bellen achieved 60 percent. At 58 percent, it is also well above the national average in Salzburg.

Van der Bellen achieved his expected best result in Vienna. Almost more exciting in the federal capital: the duel for second place, which will be decided between Rosencrantz and Wlazny using the voting cards.

The states at a glance:

  • Vienna: FPÖ hangover – mainly because of the beer festival, the Viennese election sensation. At the top, unsurprisingly, Alexander Van der Bellen. On Sunday evening, the FPÖ (with a huge party apparatus) and Dominik Wlazny from the small beer party competed for second place. The FPÖ leads the way, but the difference is in the range per thousand. The voting cards can make all the difference.
  • Lower Austria: Color change: FPÖ candidate Norbert Hofer was still very thin in 2016. He then received 50.8 percent of the vote. Yesterday Alexander Van der Bellen also received the “Absolute” in Lower Austria. At almost 53 percent, he is behind the Austrian average, but far ahead of his challengers.
  • Burgenland: In the second round six years ago, Alexander Van der Bellen achieved his weakest result among the federal states in Burgenland. This year he won a clear election with 51.9 percent – even though he was slightly below the Austrian average. The incumbent was also in first place in all municipalities of the country.
  • Carinthia: Carinthia is different again: it is the weakest state for Alexander Van der Bellen and the strongest for Walter Rosenkranz of the FPÖ. In Carinthia alone, there would be a runoff between the two. This is of political relevance in view of the upcoming Carinthian state elections in March 2023.
  • Upper Austria: In the Land above the Enns, the incumbent federal president is doing slightly worse than the national result and failed to achieve an absolute majority in 184 of the 438 municipalities. But FPÖ candidate Walter Rosenkranz is slightly stronger than in Austria as a whole. And for MFG candidate Michael Brunner, there was nothing to gain in the Corona vaccination muffle country.
  • Salzburg: Salzburg is getting friendlier with the incumbent. Although he had below-average results in all three elections in 2016 on the Salzach, this time he was 58 percent above the national trend. The smallest district, Lungau, is the exception: Walter Rosenkranz got more than 27 percent here, there would have been a runoff.
  • Tyrol: His home state of Tyrol has proved to be a good base for Alexander Van der Bellen. In most places he made the absolute, in almost all municipalities he was number 1. Only in Spiss Walter Rosenkranz won with more than 53 percent. Van der Bellen’s hotspot was his hometown of Kaunertal with 88.3 percent.
  • Vorarlberg: For the Vorarlbergers it is clear who will open the Bregenzer Festival next year: almost 60 percent voted for the incumbent Federal President. Van der Bellen received the most acclaim in the otherwise controversial chic ski resort of Lech (83%). Far behind in second place was FPÖ candidate Walter Rosenkranz with 18.1 percent.
