The Spanish government has thanked the family for their willingness and offered them the option of burial in the Cuelgamuros Crypt.
José Antonio Primo de Rivera’s family has asked for his remains, buried in the Valley of the Fallen, to be exhumed pending the transfer provided for in the Democratic Remembrance Act, which was finally passed last week.
According to a statement sent to various media and submitted by the newspaper “La Razón”, the Primo de Rivera family contacted the Abbot of the Valley of the Fallen and the General Directorate of Health of the Health Council of the Community of Madrid and have applied for the relevant permits from the City Council of San Lorenzo de El Escorial to excavate the remains.
The bereaved, according to the newspaper, assure that with this action they are fulfilling their uncle’s wish to be buried in a sacred cemetery in accordance with the Catholic rite, as the Democratic Remembrance Act states that “the crypts adjacent to the basilica and the existing burials in the same have the character of the civil cemetery”. His will is to transfer the remains to another place “that the family has decided” and that is not specified.
The regulations already provided for the “moving” of the remains that occupy a prominent place in the enclosure, as in the case of José Antonio Primo de Rivera, who, after Francisco Franco’s excavation, is the only individual grave remaining. As the family expects, it is no longer necessary for the government to carry out the transfer.
The law envisages the creation of a state inventory of places of democratic memory, including the current Valle de los Caídos, which will be renamed Valle de Cuelgamuros, and will disclose the conditions of its construction and its significance “to preserve the constitutional and democratic values”.
