Voter flow analysis – So many ex-Hofer voters gave VdB their vote

Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen again managed to convince 1.88 million of his 2.47 million voters in 2016 in the Hofburg elections. According to SORA’s voter flow analysis, he was also able to win over a significant portion of voters who voted for FPÖ candidate Norbert Hofer in the 2016 runoff.

412,000 (19 percent) of the 2.1 million Hofer voters in 2016 checked Van der Bellen this time. In total, 76 percent of his voters from 2016 voted again for Van der Bellen, according to the voter flow analysis, there is also a fifth of Hofer voters in the repeat runoff election and 8,000 votes from people who did not go to the polls in 2016.

644,000 votes from Hofer voters went to FPÖ candidate Walter Rosenkranz. In addition to a third of Hofer voters (30 percent) in 2016, he also won over 26,000 non-voters.

So many voters have been able to win over the other candidates
Six percent of Hofer voters (125,000) and eight percent of Van der Bellen voters (198,000) voted for Dominik Wlazny, as did 14,000 non-voters.

Tassilo Wallentin in particular managed to convince 217,000 former Hofer voters (10 percent), as well as 108,000 Van der Bellen voters. In addition, there were the fewest non-voters in the second round of 2016 (2000) compared to the other candidates.

Gerald Grosz managed to convince 186,000 former Hofer voters (nine percent) and 23,000 from Van der Bellen (one percent). He also convinced 17,000 former non-voters. Two percent (39,000 votes) of Norbert Hofer voters and two percent (38,000 votes) of Van der Bellen voters voted for Michael Brunner, as did 8,000 non-voters.

Heinrich Staudinger received votes from 17,000 Hofer voters and 44,000 Van der Bellen voters and 4,000 from non-voters.
