Governor Hans Peter Doskozil (SPÖ) has to undergo another operation in the larynx. He announced this on Wednesday morning in his office in the country house in Eisenstadt. The doctors in charge speak of a routine procedure.
The governor of Burgenland has been battling severe disorders of the vocal cords and larynx for more than four years. Doskozil was operated on for the first time in July 2018. As the voice deteriorated, a second surgery was scheduled for October 2019. At that time, the surgery took place in the posterior larynx area. Another operation was scheduled in March 2020 at the University Hospital of Leipzig, followed by the fourth in January 2021.

On Wednesday, the governor announced to the assembled press in his office in Eisenstadt that he wanted to undergo a fifth surgery, which doctors say is a routine procedure. “At the beginning of September I was in Leipzig for a routine check. It was found that the growth in the back of the larynx became increasingly fossilized, this is a cartilage structure. In principle, fossilization would be good from a medical point of view. But now I have more and more breathing problems because the laryngeal valve in the upper laryngeal area is pushed aside,” says Doskozil. With a cold, the problem of getting less air can get worse – that also speaks for the intervention.
Landesrat Schneemann takes over
The operation is scheduled for October 18. The operation would take about two hours. After that, Doskozil will have to take it easy. The agendas are now in the hands of State Councilor Leonhard Schneemann. However, Doskozil will remain involved in political work. He wants to stay informed via laptop and WhatsApp.
“I don’t want to sing anymore”
The governor is now confirming what some already suspected: the voice probably won’t get much better after this surgery. “But I don’t want to sing anymore,” Doskozil remarked with a wink. The first days after surgery are especially uncomfortable. He trusts the doctors in Leipzig completely. In 2018, he was advised to have his larynx removed in the AKH: “Then I would no longer have a voice.”
Help from Julia with recovery
Doskozil is expected to be under the supervision of doctors in Germany for ten days, after which recovery in home care is the order of the day. His wife Julia will fully support him in this.
