A 52-year-old Iraqi was attacked in front of his home in Klagenfurt in early June with multiple stab wounds. A security camera captured the entire event. To protect the identity of the victim, the cause remained secret until the suspect was arrested in Vienna.
The 52-year-old Iraqi was attacked with a knife outside his home in Klagenfurt on June 7, just as he was about to open the front door. The surveillance video shows the perpetrator running towards the victim, stabbing the victim several times in the shoulder and neck area and then running away again. The victim briefly chased the assailant. A second man also fled.
“The perpetrator was clearly visible in the video,” police said. “That is why detectives from the National Criminal Investigation Service have been able to track down a 19-year-old Iraqi as a suspect.”
Caught after a TV manhunt in Vienna
Despite this knowledge, however, the police could not immediately arrest the young man. Only an intensified search and the broadcast of the video on TV on October 5 yielded decisive information. The Iraqi was caught in Vienna shortly afterwards. During a search of his apartment, various weapons, including so-called blackjacks, were seized.
Anger over social media posts as motive
The investigation into the motive and possible accomplices is still ongoing – according to police, it could be a botched contract murder. The victim is a devout Catholic and had criticized various topics and the Iraqi government on various social channels. At the time of the attack, the victim probably had contact with his followers via smartphone.
The suspect says he is annoyed by the victim’s expressions on social media. During the interrogation, however, he denied any intention to murder, according to the prosecutor’s office at the request of the APA.
