Despite SP support – blue no-confidence vote against Karner fails

Date:

The FPÖ’s motion to have no confidence in Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) failed to find a majority in the National Council on Thursday. The PVV has submitted a response from the Ministry of the Interior as a reason. The SPÖ also voted in favor of the application, but justified this with the personnel policy of the VP-led interior department.

The FPÖ wanted to withdraw Karner’s confidence because of a “blatant disregard for the parliamentary right to interpellation”. The reason for this was the answer to a question – consisting of 1750 separate questions – from which the figures on crime statistics requested by the FPÖ for the first half of 2022 do not emerge. That was “a joke and a mockery” by Parliament, said blue MP Hannes Amesbauer.

Also SPÖ on FPÖ line: “Lowest Level”
On the part of the SPÖ, security spokesman Reinhold Einwallner shared criticism that the interior minister’s answers to questions were “of the lowest level”. However, according to him, Karner deserved the withdrawal of trust because of the Interior Ministry’s “partisan politically motivated personnel policy” – from top positions to the “smallest police inspectorate”.

ÖVP: FPÖ wants to break Kickl’s record of mistrust
Dissatisfaction with a question answer does not justify a vote of no confidence, ÖVP Secretary-General Christian Stocker referred to the parliamentary practice of short debates held in this case. From his point of view, the FPÖ is only breaking the record of no-confidence motions by its former interior minister and current party leader Herbert Kickl.

Green support for black interior minister
A pledge to the coalition came from Green MP Georg Bürstmayr: Karner represents an attitude that differs in many ways from that of the Greens, but the government agrees that there should be no pushbacks from refugees at the border, i.e. “people may not be beaten across borders as if they were a head of cattle”. The FPÖ, on the other hand, demanded just this – as part of a package of measures – also in a draft resolution that all other parties rejected.
