Several hundred places – Increased number of asylum seekers: the federal government is already setting up tents

Date:

The enormous increase in the number of asylum seekers is causing major problems with housing. As with the 2015 refugee crisis, migrants have to be housed in tents. Construction of the tents will start this weekend, the Federal Support Service (BBU) announced on Friday. The tents will be set up on federally owned land and the people there will remain under federal care. The first branches are in Carinthia, Tyrol, Vorarlberg and Upper Austria.

“Mainly properties and land owned by the federal government are used as sites,” said BBU director Andreas Achrainer. No tents will be set up in Traiskirchen’s first-aid center because it is already full, it is emphasized. In contrast, in Thalham’s first shelter, some have been set up, other locations may be police departments that have the appropriate spaces.

According to the BBU, the tents are housing young men who travel alone and are unlikely to stay. Women, children and families are housed in permanent housing. In a first step, the tents create space for several hundred people.

Enthusiastically looking for permanent accommodation
The BBU again appealed to the countries to provide housing. Yesterday, Thursday, a state conference on refugees was held with Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP), which mainly dealt with the housing of asylum seekers. The interior minister stressed that the clear goal is to prevent homelessness.

BBU director Andreas Achrainer stressed that the BBU is close to the limit when it comes to accommodation options. The BBU currently hosts 8,000 people, but about 5,600 of them have been admitted to the asylum procedure and therefore have to switch to basic government care, Achrainer argued.
