The announcement by Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) that tents would now be set up to receive refugees because of the exploding number of asylum seekers, gave Herbert Kickl a source of annoyance. The FPÖ federal party leader calls for an immediate end to asylum. “These tents are ‘monuments to the utter failure’ of this federal government,” Kickl criticized in a broadcast.
The enormous increase in the number of asylum seekers in Austria is causing major problems with housing. As with the 2015 refugee crisis, migrants have to be housed in tents.
Vorarlberg and Tyrol don’t want to set up tents
Construction of the tents will start this weekend, the Federal Support Service (BBU) announced on Friday. The tents will be set up on federally owned land and the people there will remain under federal care. The first locations are said to be in Carinthia, Tyrol, Vorarlberg and Upper Austria. But in Tyrol and Vorarlberg they don’t want tents, they look for buildings and offer them.
Kickl for “no way” policy
In the words of the leader of the Liberal Party, Austria needs an immediate suspension of the right to asylum, “real border protection”, including the legalization of rejections and a consistent “no way” policy, “so that our homeland becomes a country of destination for illegal migrants”.
In addition, any illegal migrant who manages to cross the border must be housed in departure centers.
According to Kickl, the federal government is not only directly responsible for border protection and security in Austria, but is also obliged to do so.
FPÖ leader defends asylum course under his rule
Kickl defended the harsh asylum policy under his reign as Minister of the Interior. “In 2018, only 13,746 asylum applications were submitted in Austria, in 2019 there were 12,886. From 2020, after ÖVP ministers and the lack of a move to the Ministry of the Interior, things moved quickly, so that by the end of September 70,000 asylum applications had already been submitted. By the end of the year there will be more than 100,000 if the ÖVP and the Greens continue their irresponsible ‘open borders’ policy – not to mention the more than 80,000 Ukrainians,” said the federal party chairman of the FPÖ.
