At socialist meeting: – SPÖ leader Rendi-Wagner promotes gas price ceilings

Date:

At the congress of the European Social Democratic Party (SPE) in Berlin on Saturday, SPÖ leader Pamela Rendi-Wagner again emphasized the need for market regulation and a European gas price ceiling. The SP delegation is represented by seven delegates at the meeting at the invitation of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD).

Rendi-Wagner spoke on Saturday as part of the panel “Our Europe: Taking care of the planet” and explained: “We must prevent the energy crisis from turning into a social crisis. The past months have clearly shown us that the European energy market in this crisis does not work and is against people and the economy.”

According to the SPÖ leader, the logical consequences should be market regulation and a gas ceiling in Europe. “Prices can be reduced if EU countries buy gas together and pass it on to households, industry and energy producers at supported prices,” Rendi said on stage.

Plan SPÖ provides for joint gas purchasing
The SPÖ plan for the gas price ceiling provides that the EU countries jointly purchase gas at market prices and pass this on to the population and the economy at a supported price of 50 euros per megawatt hour. This reduces both gas prices and electricity costs, which are based on gas prices.

The SPÖ leader’s bilateral talks focused on the energy crisis, record inflation and the war in Ukraine. Rendi-Wagner spoke with German Chancellor Scholz and meetings were also held with Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and outgoing Swedish Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson.

300 delegates and over 1000 guests
The two-day congress is attended by nearly 300 delegates and more than 1000 guests, including several heads of government, numerous party leaders and some EU Commissioners. The seven SPÖ deputies also include Viennese mayor Michael Ludwig and EU parliamentarians Andreas Schieder and Evelyn Regner.
