The former boss of ÖBAG and secretary general of the Ministry of Finance, Thomas Schmid, has heavily burdened Sebastian Kurz in several cases. The ex-chancellor is said to have intervened at the Ministry of Finance to give his partner Susanne Thier a higher salary. Kurz now vehemently denies this to the “Krone”.
Kurz told the Krone on Wednesday night: “I checked again myself, there has never been a pay rise for my girlfriend. This allegation is also fictitious.”
word to word
Schmid, in turn, explained under the WKStA protocol that Kurz had argued “that there will be a pay rise for Ms. Thier” — apparently this happened in 2016, when Kurz was foreign minister and Thier worked in the Treasury Department.
In addition, Schmid admitted that he had also campaigned to “adjust” Thier’s salary, which was justified with “increased workload” and “supervision of evening events”. According to Schmid, he then became active and “as far as I can remember, that was how it was implemented”. The ex-ÖBAG boss continued that there had been discussions on this subject between Schmid and the ex-chancellor’s partner.
Kurz has so far denied all of Schmid’s allegations. This is statement against statement. On Tuesday it was announced that Schmid had turned to the Economic and Corruption Public Prosecution Service (WKStA) to potentially receive leniency status.
