Former Catalan soccer player David Belenguer has left the presidency of Sociedad Anónima Deportiva (SAD) of Tondela, a club currently playing in the Portuguese second division and where he was in charge in 2018.
In a statement released on its official website, Tondela reported that it “rescinded all SAD actions” at the hands of Belenguer and thanked him for his “dedication to the club’s professional football growth.”
Belenguer, who as a player went through teams like Celta de Vigo, Getafe or Betis, acquired 80% of the club’s SAD shares in November 2018 and has since taken over the day-to-day management .
This acquisition was made through the Hope Group, an entity that participates in the management of other clubs such as Granada, Parma or two from China.
A few seasons in the elite
Under his presidency, the modest Tondela managed to stay for several consecutive seasons in the first division of Portugal, but last year he did not achieve permanence.
Despite relegating to the second division, Tondela reached the final of the Portuguese Cup, which they lost to Porto, and this season they faced and lost against the ‘dragons’ in the Portuguese Super Cup.
Penalty for transfer
In addition to the downgrade, Belenguer’s life at Tondela’s SAD chief was complicated last summer by a dispute between one of his players, Algerian defender Naoufel Khacef, and his former club , Na Hussein-Dey, also from Algeria. .
Khacef unilaterally terminated his contract with the Algerian club in 2020 before signing for Tondela, but FIFA deemed there was no “just cause” to do so and punished the defender and the Portuguese entity itself, banning him to register new players in the two transfer market windows.
The Portuguese League highlights its contribution
Belenguer’s role in Tondela was emphasized by the president of the Portuguese League, Pedro Proença, who assured on his social networks that Portuguese football “won a lot” with the former Catalan defender.
In addition, “it is an added value for clubs and national professional competitions, due to his knowledge and strategic vision, the result of experience gained in the diverse context of the Spanish League,” said Proença. “David Belenguer will always have recognition in the Portuguese League and an open door to professional football in the country.”
