Criticism of Gewessler – LH Markus Wallner: “There is no pace at Wasserkraft”

Date:

Two billion investment, 1,000 megawatts of power: a pumped-storage power plant in the state is not expected to go online until 2038 (!). LH Wallner demands more speed from Gewessler.

The turning point in the energy sector has begun. Some people will think it’s time. In Vorarlberg a mega project is in the starting blocks, the “Lünerseewerk II”.

With a capacity of 1000 megawatts, it was able to power not only “the country”, but also the regions around Vorarlberg. It would become the largest pumped storage plant in Austria.

Power station “indispensable”
The power plant should be built in the mountain, but country manager Markus Wallner does not want to stay “behind the mountain”: “The current situation makes the pumped storage plant indispensable: photovoltaics and wind do not provide security of supply. Wind is not always available in Vorarlberg.”

in time
By 2030, the Ländle aims to be autonomous in electricity production. This is running out of time.

The problem: Wallner, in particular, isn’t doing the environmental impact assessment (EIA) fast enough. This is planned for five years. That sounds like a snail’s pace.

The construction could only be completed in 2038 (!).

Wallner’s criticism is aimed at Environment Minister Leonore Gewessler (Greens). They are too much in favor of wind energy and photovoltaics. According to Wallner, the minister brakes too slowly when it comes to hydropower.

The ministry says: “We are currently working on an amendment to the EIA Act. This amendment aims to introduce an accelerated procedure for renewable energy projects.” But it is also important that coalition partner ÖVP agrees quickly. Wallner remains critical: “There are delicate attempts with this amendment, but the ambition is lacking.” be. There is a lack of speed with hydropower.”
