Because they allegedly ordered his murder, Chechen ruler Ramzan Kadyrov has vowed blood revenge against three Russian politicians from the North Caucasus. A business dispute over Russia’s largest online retailer had previously escalated into a fatal shooting.
Kadyrov threatened three politicians in a video published on Telegram. Two of them are from the neighboring republic of Dagestan. Sulejman Kerimov is a senator in the Council of the Russian Federation and Riswan Kurbanov is a deputy in the Moscow Duma. Kadyrov also wants to take revenge on Duma representative Bekchan Barachoyev from the neighboring republic of Ingushetia.
Kadyrov calls for “proof to the contrary”
He accused them of hatching an assassination plot against him: “If they do not prove otherwise, I will formally announce a blood feud,” Kadyrov told Russia’s state news agency Tass. This form of private retaliation is usually intended to honor the family by killing an opponent or his or her relatives.
Two dead after shooting at online store
The background to the escalation is a dispute over Russia’s largest online retailer, Wildberries. A power struggle for the empire has broken out between founder Tatjana Kim and her outgoing husband Vladislaw Bakalchuk. Bakalchuk tried to enter the company’s headquarters in Moscow in September. Two Wildberries security guards were killed in an ensuing gunfight. Kerimov from Dagestan supports Kim in the conflict, while Kadyrov sides with her husband.
Despite the threats Kadyrov made in the video against politicians from neighboring republics, he said the incident in Moscow should not be interpreted as an ethnic dispute.
Kadyrov has been in power in the republic of Chechnya, located in the Caucasus, since 2007. He is accused of literally terrorizing the civilian population. He is alleged to have committed serious human rights violations, such as torture and coercion.
