Curricula reform – NEOS urgently calls for “true education turnaround”

Date:

In school year 2023/2024, primary and secondary schools and AHS lower curricula will receive new curricula. Last week the first regulation was sent for assessment with the new compulsory subject “digital basic education”. That’s not enough for the NEOS. The reform was announced for last fall, but Education Minister Martin Polaschek (ÖVP) has not submitted anything yet, criticizes education spokeswoman Martina Künsberg Sarre. She calls for a “real turnaround in education”.

“With their timetables and curricula, our schools seem to have run out of time,” Kunsberg Sarre said on Tuesday. She wants a major reform of the curriculum so that the school can meet the demands of the 21st century.

If the NEOS have their way, skills from financial, economic and environmental education should be integrated into the curricula, the “rigid subject logic” is outdated and should disappear. The teaching staff also urgently needs more self-determination and too little attention is paid to the talents and talents of young people. Künsberg Sarre advocates for more interconnected education and for innovative and interdisciplinary projects to promote critical reflection and understanding of social, political and economic contexts. Schools should have at least ten percent of the annual teaching time free for more interaction with the world of work or for projects.
