The Green Mayor of Innsbruck, Georg Willi, was “open” about who should lead the Greens in the upcoming National Council elections. “We have at least three great people. The coming months will tell,” Willi said in an interview.
In addition to Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler, he also appointed Justice Minister Alma Zadic and Transport Minister Leonore Gewessler. When asked which of the three he liked best, the mayor said in the APA interview: “I can’t say that today. Everyone has incredible strengths.”
‘Kogler can take people with him’
The question of the top candidate will be decided by the Greens “in a democratic basic way”, Willi emphasized. He therefore experiences Green Party leader Kogler, who wants to reapply for office, as insecure. At the same time, the city boss also praised the vice chancellor: “He is a mix between determination and someone who can explain well and take people along.”
In any case, the Greens should ‘sell our successes with more confidence’ in the election campaign and say: ‘This only exists because the Greens exist.’ The Eco Party is “the only force willing to take the bravest steps in the fight on climate change, for example to institute”.
On April 14, the city manager must fight municipal elections. When it comes to possible coalitions with Green participation, Willi did not want to commit himself. A “center-left” coalition with the SPÖ and NEOS is possible, as is continued cooperation with the ÖVP. For mathematical reasons, a two-party coalition will likely no longer be possible.
No preference among possible coalition partners
He has no preference here, says Willi. It will be about with which partners the objectives important to the Greens can be achieved, especially with regard to the ‘energy transition’.
