In this sense, he has ensured that the cycling event will serve to publicize the uniqueness of Euskadic, a country with its “own culture and language”, with its sights “beyond our borders” and ready to innovate. “A deeply European and pro-European country,” he added. Likewise, he has assured that his government shares “the same values of cycling”: “work as a team, help those who are left behind and celebrate the victories collectively”.
After assuring that the Basque Country is “thoroughly preparing” to host the sporting event, he has invited “the entire Tour family” to live in what is known as the “Grand Départ”. “We will welcome you with the desire to make you feel at home,” he concluded.
The award ceremony, which took place at the Palais des Congrès in Paris, was attended by the general deputies of Álava, Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa – Ramiro González, Unai Rementería and Markel Olano respectively – along with the Lehendakari, as well as the mayors of Vitoria-Gasteiz, Bilbao and San Sebastián—Gorka Urtaran, Juan María Aburto, and Eneko Goia—. The Ministers of Culture, Bingen Zupiria, and Tourism, Javier Hurtado, of the Basque government also participated.
Next year’s edition of the Tour de France will start in Bilbao and will cover 530 kilometers in the Basque Country, spread over the first stages of one of the biggest sporting events.
On the other hand, the Lehendakari and the rest of the institutional representatives who have come to the French capital will new headquarters of the Basque government in Paris.
