Poll shock – 83% think: “Austrian politicians are corrupt”

Date:

Leg scraping, secret statements at the WKStA, phone taps, tax audit interventions, haggling at work, etc.: the corruption allegations against the ÖVP are currently on the rise. Nobody is cold, not even the voters. The events overshadow the entire political scene: 83% of Austrians think all our politicians are corrupt. “A resounding slap in the face to the entire political system,” pollster Christoph Haselmayer of the Institute for Public Opinion and Data Analysis (IFDD) said in a live conversation with krone.tv presenter Conny Winiwarter.

“Everyone is the same, everyone is corrupt” – something like that is quickly said at the regular table. But it reflects the real public perception of our politicians, as shown by a recent survey by the IFDD. The fact that 83% of people are convinced that Austrian politicians – regardless of party – are corrupt could help the ÖVP “eventually”, Haselmayer thinks, but all in all it is an indictment of our country.

There is a “tiny glimmer of hope, if you will” in the international corruption equation: just under a third think our politicians are more corrupt than those in other EU countries.

“Pogo has a positive Stronach effect”

It is complete overkill for the Austrian people, especially in terms of inflation, they have the feeling that “the politicians are looking after their own pockets”. One thing is clear: trust in government has been damaged. This is impressively apparent from the so-called “Sunday question”. The IFDD’s research for PULS4 yields impressive results: 1st place for the SPÖ, followed by the FPÖ. The ÖVP gets just under 20% of the vote and slides into third place.

Marco Pogo and his beer party would currently even depose coalition partner The Greens. “Many voters do not agree with the Greens on the wall” and therefore switch to the young, fresh beer party. “Marco Pogo has the positive Stronach effect,” Haselmayer sums up.

Leniency status not helpful

Also exciting: many people don’t think the leniency status revived by Thomas Schmid is wise: almost half of the population is against the leniency status for officials of the republic. However, many understand the leniency status “like in American movies, where you go unpunished”, the pollster puts it into perspective. Of course, that wouldn’t be the case with Thomas Schmid, even if he did become a star witness.
