Health Considers Expanding Osakidetza’s Workforce With Another 919 Structural Positions By 2023

The Minister of Health, Gotzone Sagarduannounced that the draft budget bill is considering expanding Osakidetza’s workforce by an additional 919 structural positions, which could allow it to reach 30,992 professionals.

Last October, the Board of Directors approved the largest increase in Osakidetza’s staff in the past two decades, with a total of 2,467 places (of which 358 for primary care), bringing the structural personnel of the Basque health service to 30,073 places.

The budgets of the Ministry of Health will reach the in 2023 4638.9 million euros, 6% (256.9 million) more compared to the budget for 2022. The growth of recent years is thus maintained: 5.9% in 2022 compared to 2021; 4% in 2021 over 2020; and 6% in 2020 compared to the previous year.

The Ministry of Health is again the area of ​​the Basque government with the largest financial resources. Sagardui explained that the goal of this fiscal effort is “to move towards health without inequalities, closer to and at the service of the people, through the promotion of government policies related to health and well-being”.

The investment per capita in health of the Basque government will amount to 2,114 euros in 2023, which represents an increase of almost 25% compared to the figure of the last year before the pandemic (2019).

The direct healthcare Citizenship will continue to concentrate the bulk of budget growth in 2023. For example, the endowment allocated to Osakidetza grew again, by 6%, to EUR 3,733 million. More than two-thirds (65%) of this total goes to personnel, with expenditure rising from 2,264 million euros last year to 2,426 million euros in 2023.
