Saturday morning in the old town hall of Linz. Formerly a chapel, the mayor’s office has a masonry bay window with stained glass windows dating back over 300 years. “Pure history,” says Klaus Luger, after all, he’s not religious, never has been. “I’m probably the only politician in the area who doesn’t wear a traditional costume,” explains the social democrat, who was once a communist in his younger days. On the desk is a picture of the patchwork family and on the wall is a two-by-two-metre pastel photograph by the artist Gottfried Mairwöger entitled ‘Under milk wood’. It is a maximum of 17 degrees, a result of the energy-saving measures for public buildings. What is meant is Halloween night, when 129 youths rioted and terrified the city.
