A journey 20 years ago brought new problems to Styrian KPÖ deputy Werner Murgg: he was at the time in Stalinist North Korea. Again his resignation is demanded.
The Werner Murgg affair was put on hold for a few weeks, and now the ideologically staunch communist member of the state parliament is once again caught in the crossfire. It became known that 20 years ago he also visited the isolated Stalinist North Korea at the invitation of a trade union. Incidentally, then already with the deputy mayor of Trofaiach, Gabriele Leitenbauer, and the Graz city council, Kurt Luttenberger, with whom Murgg also visited the Donbass region in Ukraine occupied by pro-Russian rebels in 2019.
Even Grüner says: “This is unacceptable”
On Friday, renewed calls for resignation were not long in coming. What stood out, however, was that while the Graz parties almost collectively targeted Luttenberger (even Tristan Ammerer of the Green coalition partner says on Twitter that such a friendly visit is “unacceptable”), the state side only asked for his resignation from the NEOS . .
Pink club president Niko Swatek accuses Murgg of “love for murderous dictatorships” and refers to a 2002 KPÖ ceremony in Leoben to mark the eighth anniversary of Kim Il Sung’s death. “The barrel is full,” says Swatek.
Withdrawal further excluded
Murgg’s ideology has always been known, it became a major political issue, as did his travels after the KPÖ’s surprise election victory in Graz in 2020. More and more photos and videos appeared. The biggest push came in the fall of 2022, when Murgg gave a speech describing Ukraine as a “crippled nation” – Murgg later apologized for this. However, he and his party are not thinking of resigning.
