Asylum crisis meeting in Belgrade. The debate on the European Convention on Human Rights does not go far enough for Karl Nehammer. He relies on bilateral agreements. A fact check.
Gray clouds hang over Belgrade during the meeting between Chancellor Karl Nehammer, Serbian Prime Minister Aleksandar Vučić and Hungarian President Viktor Orbán. A declaration of intent between the countries about increased border security should also reduce the number of asylum applications in Austria.
Border fence needs to be raised
The border fence on the Serbian-Hungarian border, which is four meters high and 175 kilometers long, will also be raised to five meters. Is it all gray theory in the fight against the refugee flow? Nehammer, the current discussion about amending the European Convention on Human Rights does not go far enough, European asylum policy needs to be overhauled. Lots of ideas to get the asylum chaos under control. But what is feasible and what is the status quo?
- ÖVP club president August Wöginger wants one Revision of the European Convention on Human Rights. Is this realistic?
Austria should submit the application to the Council of Europe. 46 states have signed the ECHR. All 46 states would have to agree to the specific application. In theory it is possible. In practice, it is a long-term project that can never be completed within one legislature. A lot of symbolic politics from Wöginger.
- ÖVP General Christian Stocker claims that the ECHR prevents this Dublin deportations to Italy and Hungary. Is that really true?
Only 50 percent of Stocker’s claims are correct. Austria can deport to Italy. But since 2011, according to justice, no longer to Greece. Hungary has been violating EU law for years by flatly refusing to return people.
- Can the ÖVP do this debate benefit from the ECHR?
No, is the unanimous opinion of political experts. If the ÖVP thinks this appeals to voters, they are dead wrong. The applause of the heads of country for Wöginger’s proposal only benefits Kickl. Because the citizens of the ÖVP, unlike the Kurz era, are no longer able to solve problems on this issue.
- Fast 100,000 asylum applications have been placed in Austria so far in 2022.
Of the approximately 97,000, 21,000 asylum seekers are in basic care. 27,000 have evaded the asylum procedure. There are still 45,000 pending procedures, although it is not known whether these asylum seekers are still in Austria.
