The lehendakari Inigo Urkullu reaffirmed its “no to violence and no to war” and justified “dialogue as a method of conflict resolution” by recalling the exodus of thousands of boys and girls during the 1937 civil war, and comparing it to the current context of war in Ukraine.
Urkullu chaired this morning in Santurtzi (Bizkaia) the commemoration of the 85th anniversary of the evacuation of Basque children in exile in an attempt by the then Basque government to distance itself from the civil war. In the act of evacuating a portion of the people when they were few in attendance, a memorial sculpture of the people evacuated during the war, on the quay of the harbor of the fishing village. It was exactly where the ship left 85 years ago Havana with about 4,000 boys and girls on board.
“The images of 85 years ago, the images of today, reaffirm our no to war! They reaffirm us in non-violence and dialogue as a method of conflict resolution; they reaffirm our commitment to ethical and democratic principles and values,” he emphasized.
In addition, the lehendakari has emphasized the Euskadi’s hospitable spirit, referring to the families that today welcome children from the Sahara or from the Chernobyl area and, currently especially, the child victims of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. “85 years later, history repeats itself, albeit in the opposite direction,” he said.
