There is still a fuss about the chancellor’s trip to Moscow. Who Karl Nehammer listens to and why this puts him in a difficult position.
Even Sebastian Kurz had a so-called “inner circle”, a close circle of confidants who were always involved and to whom he listened. Karl Nehammer has created his own little circle. In addition to press spokesman Daniel Kosak, these include Nehammer’s wife Katharina, who was once the press spokeswoman for Wolfgang Sobotka at the Interior Ministry and later deputy private secretary for Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner, as well as former Bild boss Kai Diekmann.
Headache at your own party
The latter caused a headshake and headache for the ÖVP and discontent among the opposition. The NEOS have already launched a parliamentary inquiry at the Federal Chancellery, they want to know which services Diekmann, who was with Nehammer in both Kiev and Moscow, used. The FPÖ announced further investigations.
The Chancellery emphasizes that there is no contractual relationship with Diekmann, that he made both trips free of charge and also borne the costs himself. Diekmann was helpful because he had a lot of expertise.
“Plaything of an ego show”
Many in the ÖVP see it differently and are not very enthusiastic about the advisor, who is now causing problems. The reasons for the turquoise frustration: Diekmann posed with the Klitschko brothers during the trip to Kiev (it is said that a good adviser does not push himself in the front row), and he slandered the Russia expert Gerhard Mangott. One insider put it this way: “The chancellor becomes the plaything of an ego show.”
