Consult with us! – Do we need more Austrian citizens?

Date:

Austria has one of the strictest procedures for becoming a citizen. The SPÖ therefore argues for easier obstacles. Do we need better access and also more citizens? Katia Wagner talks about this with her guests on Wednesday 8:15 PM on krone.tv!

Austria has almost no voting citizens left! Because: the share of those who are allowed to vote at the ballot box is falling. In the federal presidential election that took place just a few weeks ago, every sixth in five people over the age of 16 were not allowed to vote. The reason: they do not have Austrian citizenship!

Van der Bellen and SPÖ want easier obstacles
This is one of the reasons why Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen, but also the SPÖ, have spoken out in favor of changing the entry barriers for citizenship. “Our society lives from the fact that we shape it together. Participation should be open to everyone. They want more of a say to secure our democracy – and access to citizenship and therefore to the ballot is essential to them.

Mayor: award is ‘socially unfair’
In Vienna, even one in three is not allowed to vote. For Mayor Michael Ludwig, most would fail because of the financial and bureaucratic hurdles involved in obtaining citizenship. This would mean that about 80-90% of cleaning staff and unskilled workers would have no chance of obtaining Austrian citizenship. According to Ludwig, this was “socially unfair”.

Easier access to citizenship? Wednesday 8.15 pm on krone.tv!
However, for Chancellor Karl Nehammer, softening is “out of the question”. Does this mean the topic is over or should it be discussed whether Austria – after all, one of the strictest countries when it comes to naturalization – should allow more people access to citizenship? Katia Wagner discusses this tomorrow, Wednesday, at 8:15 pm with her guests on krone.tv. Join the conversation and tune in!
