EH Bildu’s parliamentary spokesperson, Maddalena Iriarteunderlined that renewable energy sources play an important role “the only alternative” in the fight against climate change. “There is no other choice,” he has argued, choosing to install them “as little destructive as possible.”

In an interview for Euskadi Irratia’s “Faktoria” program, the also candidate for Gipuzkoa in the 2023 regional elections has defended the energy strategy that the sovereignist coalition has just presented. The strategy has been committed halve energy consumption, promoting self-reliance. As she has argued, “we can achieve a great deal of self-sufficiency by reducing consumption, which requires a culture change. When I was a kid, there was another culture that was lost. We turned off the lights and put our robes so as not to turn on the heating. I’m not talking about going back to the caves, but about reflecting.”

When asked about the different renewable energy models, she insisted that those moving towards a democratic model should be given priority, admitting that the model developed in Maeztu (Álava) by the Ekiola cooperative is a good example. “It is very important to empower citizens, but the government departments must continue on that path. It is a process that has been delayed and now we are carrying it out on the run,” he complained.

As for the parks designed by the Norwegian company Statfrakt in Gipuzkoa and Álava, he explained that they talk to the people and that “the most appropriate strategy” should be analyzed for each area, “and destroy as little as possible”. According to him, this model differs from the one proposed by society aixindar (consisting of Iberdrola and EVE), since in the case of Statkraft there is the alternative of dividing the ownership of the parks, while in the case of Aixeindar the proposal comes from Iberdrola, and therefore “there is a risk of repetition of the fashion model”.
