Magnitude 4.8 – Several earthquakes have shaken Central Greece

Date:

Several tremors rocked central Greece on Tuesday morning. The strongest quake had a magnitude of 4.8 and was located at a depth of about 13 kilometers below the seabed southeast of the island of Evia. The earthquake was also felt in the capital Athens, some 60 kilometers away.

“So far we have no information about injuries or damage,” said Lefteris Raviolos, mayor of the town of Karystos on the island of Evia.

However, thousands of people were awakened from their sleep as the quake hit just after 6:30 am (local time).

Schools in the region will remain closed on Tuesday as a precaution. According to seismologists, there were numerous before and aftershocks, some of them powerful, before and after the magnitude 4.8 quake.
