Interview with the representative of the Spanish government in Euskadi, Denis Itxaso, on December 1 on Radio Euskadi

Date:

In contrast, the Spanish government’s delegate to the Basque Country has defended continuing to subsidize public transport in 2023, insisting that in the Basque Country there are “resources, capacity and competence to maintain” the reductions, regardless of what the state does.

The Delegate of the Spanish Government in Euskadi, Denis Itxasohas defended the actions of the Interior Minister, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, in the Melilla tragedy and he recalled that on June 24 there was “an attack on the fence, an illegal raid attempt, and ultimately a humanitarian tragedy with many deaths.”

In an interview for the program “Boulevard” of Radio Euskadi, Itxaso referred in this way to the position taken yesterday by the minister, who once again insisted that there were no deaths on Spanish soil, contrary to what the various videos published through different media.

The socialist leader has assured that it is useful to clarify because in his words there is “some confusion” that “the fact that a given country is owned by an institution does not mean that it is national territory” and has compared it to Artikutza, which is owned by the San Sebastian City Council, but is located in the territory of Navarra. He explains, for example, that the Guardia Civil can only use force on national territory. He has advocated “raising the magnifying glass and thoroughly analyzing the fact” and claims that “it seems difficult that the person responsible for these deaths is the Spanish state when the aggression came from another area”.

About the difference of opinion between the PNV and the PSE-EE about the discounts on public transport in 2023, the representative of the Spanish government in Euskadi has defended continuity after this year, because it is a social measure that benefits citizens. For Itxaso, “a wealthy community like ours, considering deflating income taxes, deserves an in-depth debate, whether the state gives us a telegram or not.” For example, he stressed that in Euskadi there are “resources, capacity and competence to” maintain these discounts, “regardless of what the state does”.
