“Rational access” – Ludwig demands work permits for asylum seekers

Date:

Mayor Michael Ludwig (SPÖ) of Vienna advocates granting work permits to asylum seekers. In the ORF “Persuur” on Sunday, he said that it should be clarified “closely with the social partners” whether people can already be integrated into the domestic labor market during their ongoing asylum procedure. Ludwig also justified his initiative with the fact that there was an urgent demand for workers.

Ludwig pleaded for a “rational approach” and for not confusing the themes of asylum, migration and integration. People who have a good chance of staying here must be integrated more quickly into the labor market. Partly in view of the demographic development with the imminent retirement of the baby boom generation, meeting the need for labor is a major challenge.

Ludwig: “Extreme effort”, which is “necessary”.
Whether and from when people must obtain a work permit during the asylum procedure must be clarified with the social partners. In this context, Ludwig spoke of a “force” that was “necessary”. It is about creating a bridging function between the subjects of asylum and place of business.

With regard to the Länder quota for the reception of asylum seekers, Ludwig once again called for solidarity not only from the federal government, but also from the other Länder, as Vienna is the only Länder to meet the quota. However, the mayor of Vienna does not want sanctions for the other states, nor does the federal government want to reintroduce its right of access. Instead, Ludwig called for a different culture of conversation.

Ludwig criticized the extension of the subsidy for housing and heating announced by the federal government, as did SPÖ leader Pamela Rendi-Wagner the day before. He was very much in favor of households getting money given the dramatic rise in energy prices, but a gas price cap like the one in Germany, he said, would be a better sustainable solution.

Looks skeptical about abolishing the 3G rule
When it came to Corona, the mayor of Vienna was skeptical about the federal government’s intention to scrap the 3G rule in hospitals, nursing homes and retirement homes. Ludwig pointed out that these are particularly sensitive areas. In view of the bottlenecks in the hospitals, Ludwig sent an invitation to the medical association to come up with common solutions.

Defends his actions at Wien-Energie
Ludwig did not specifically want to say whether he would make his mobile phone data available to the Wien Energie investigation committee. We await what the chairman proposes. In any case, he would act like this again “with the knowledge of the time”, Ludwig defended that he had provided a total of 1.4 billion euros through emergency power. And with today’s knowledge none of this would have been necessary because the money was not needed.

The mayor again ruled out a move to federal politics. And he also reiterated that Rendi-Wagner should be the best candidate for the SPÖ in the next national elections.
