Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner (ÖVP) wants to sign an air safety agreement with Germany on Friday. The two states plan to better regulate the cross-border control of potentially dangerous civil aircraft.
These are mainly aircraft with which radio contact has been lost or whose pilots do not respond. A well-known example was the crash of the Cessna about three months ago, in which, among other things, the pilot lost consciousness due to lack of oxygen. In these cases, the German-Austrian agreement is intended to facilitate the exchange of information on the general air situation. In addition, it must be possible to escort and identify suspicious civil aircraft across borders. They are thus considered part of military airspace surveillance. Pushbacks or warning shots are still not allowed in the airspace of the other country.
Interceptors, specialized fighter aircraft, are responsible for the deployment. They are on constant standby at airbases during peacetime to respond to threats such as potential hijackings. “With this contractual cooperation, we enable our air force to respond even faster to non-military threats to protect the Austrian population,” Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner (ÖVP) said before signing.
Defense ministers meeting
It is scheduled for Friday afternoon together with her German colleague Christine Lambrecht (SPD) in Berchtesgaden, Bavaria. A trilateral meeting is then scheduled, at which Swiss Defense Minister Viola Amherd will also be present.
