While EU countries are currently discussing a twelfth package of sanctions against Russia, an Upper Austrian company is facing accusations of violating existing punitive measures in response to the attack on Ukraine.
Russian historian and journalist Kamil Galeev tweeted that GFM Steyr supplies Russia with radial forging machines used for the production of tanks and artillery.
Company denies allegations
Galeev claims that Russian artillery production is completely dependent on several dozen radial forging machines from GFM Steyr and that spare parts are also purchased there. The company rejected this: “GFM strongly condemns the Russian invasion of Ukraine and of course we adhere to and fully support any sanctions put in place against Russia. We have not had any business case with Russian companies for a long time,” said a statement in German and English published on the company’s website on Wednesday.
The company, which according to the trade register has seen its turnover increase from around 32 million euros in 2021 to almost 70 million euros in 2022 and is privately owned, employs 400 people in Austria, Great Britain and the US, according to information on its homepage .
