Minister of Women, Family, Media and Integration Susanne Raab (ÖVP) on the chancellor’s trip to Moscow, advisers, the definition of feminism and different types of aid.
The female minister in a group of only women – no staging, but coincidence in today’s “Club 3”. In an interview with Martina Salomon (“Kurier”) and Doris Vettermann (Kronen Zeitung), Raab defended Chancellor Karl Nehammer’s controversial trip to Moscow: “What’s the alternative?”
She is convinced that this was the right decision, according to Raab. About the equally controversial chancellor advisor, the former “Bild” boss Kai Diekmann, the minister only said: it is up to you with whom you want to exchange views.
Since the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine, 58,000 refugees have already been registered in Austria and it is estimated that there are 200,000. “The number of displaced persons is still increasing, but not as exponentially as in recent weeks. However, should the situation continue to deteriorate, especially in eastern Ukraine, which is unfortunately to be expected, we expect that this will also affect Austria,” said Raab.
Something different when the war is 500 kilometers away
How does she see the debate on a dual society for refugees? Are the displaced persons from Ukraine being played off against people from Africa or, for example, from Afghanistan? No, she doesn’t see that at all, emphasizes the minister. But immediately says that it is something different whether the war is 500 kilometers away or on another continent.
There are also differences in integration and in the form of help. The government wants to raise the side-earning threshold for people from Ukraine – so far Carinthia has resisted this.
Women’s rights advocate
After taking office in 2020, Susanne Raab said she was not a feminist – which caused a stir. Does she describe herself differently these days? “I want to define myself. I see myself as a fighter for women’s rights and all women in Austria.” – “Aren’t you automatically a feminist?” – “If you see it that way in your definition, please. But everyone has to judge that for themselves.”
