Austria is supporting Ukraine in rebuilding the energy infrastructure that was badly damaged by the Russian attacks. The Ministry of Leonore Gewessler is making five million euros available for this, it was announced on Friday.
The money will be used to make urgently needed repairs to Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. According to a joint statement by Minister Gewessler and Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler, this could help support the civilian population. “Austria, as a neutral country, should be particularly committed in this area,” said Kogler. Gewessler sees the financial aid as an “act of solidarity and as a contribution to the very important reconstruction of damaged infrastructure in Ukraine”.
The aid from Austria is provided within the framework of the so-called Energy Community based in Vienna. This community consists of the EU and several countries in Southeastern Europe. The organization has set up a task force to help Ukraine coordinate the donation process and the delivery of energy equipment, fuel and materials.
Emergency operation of the energy supply after attacks
After another massive shelling by the Russian army, the Ukrainian government on Friday switched the national energy supply to emergency operations. The presidential administration in Kiev called on people, often in the cold and darkness, to understand the attacks that have been going on for weeks. There are places of protection and warmth in the country where they can go. Emergency services would also work to repair the affected and damaged power plants.
