Twelve thousand will provide security to prevent incidents after the Morocco-Croatia this Saturday for third and fourth place
France will bolster its security apparatus this weekend ahead of Saturday’s third-place match between Croatia and Morocco and Sunday’s final between Les Bleus and Argentina in the World Cup in Qatar.
Some 12,800 police and gendarmes will be mobilized across France on Saturday to ensure security and prevent incidents following the Croatia-Morocco match. On Sunday, 14,000 agents will be present for the World Cup final, French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin announced.
If France wins the World Cup, the police prefecture expects between 300,000 and 600,000 French fans to flock to the Champs-Élysées in Paris to celebrate their team’s victory.
For the semi-final between France and Morocco, which was played last Wednesday, 10,000 agents were mobilized throughout France, including 5,000 police officers in the Paris region.
Despite this strong security apparatus, the celebration of France’s passage to the final ended in tragedy: a 14-year-old teenager died on Wednesday in Montpellier (southern France) after being hit by a vehicle, which fled. In addition, police arrested 266 people across France, 167 of whom were arrested in and around Paris. About 40 detainees belonged to right-wing extremist groups.
