FPÖ soon at the top? – Polls show: Kickl on the rise

Date:

According to polls, the PVV is fighting for first place, party leader Herbert Kickl has set the Chancellery as a target. Migration, inflation and Corona play into the hands of the FPÖ.

He has his own “Project Ballhausplatz”: unlike failed ÖVP chancellor Sebastian Kurz, FPÖ party leader Herbert Kickl makes no secret of his intention to move to the chancellery. He speaks this openly. But from today’s perspective, this plan is not entirely unrealistic. In several recent polls, the FPÖ is competing with the SPÖ for first place. Red and blue currently hold about 26 percent each.

The ÖVP lags behind in third place with 20 percent.

FPÖ is well positioned – SPÖ lacks leadership
Pollster Peter Hajek sees the FPÖ as “well positioned”. Migration pressures, war-fueled inflation and the easing of the pandemic all play into their hands. “The vaccine skeptics feel validated and unnecessarily pressured by the government,” Hajek explains. “Kickl scored points on all these points.” The exact opposite can be observed in the ÖVP and SPÖ, on the other hand. There is a lack of leadership in the management team and there is a lack of topic leadership. The ÖVP is currently trying to get involved in the issue of migration and EU border control. So far this is not reflected positively in the polls.

Groenen and NEOS are very stable at eleven to twelve and around ten percent respectively. According to Hajek, this is not self-evident for the Greens, because “as a ruling party they do not have an easy role”.

Nobody wants to form a coalition with the FPÖ
Should Kickl actually come first in the National Council elections, due in 2024 at the latest, he would find it difficult to find a government partner. From the current perspective, none of the other parties is willing to co-govern with an FPÖ led by Kickl.
