The future leader of the parliamentary group of Social Democratic Trade Unionists (FSG), Josef Muchitsch, wants to put Burgenland governor Hans-Peter Doskosil (SPÖ) in his place: “This constant public gossip” is a disgrace to the movement, Muchitsch Wednesday criticized in the Ö1 “Mittagsjournal”, for example regarding investigations commissioned by the Burgenland state party.
According to these polls, published in November, the federal SPÖ would be in a better position with Doskozil than with current party leader Pamela Rendi-Wagner. The federal party presidency, which meets on January 4 and 5 for the New Year’s retreat in Klagenfurt, must say very clearly: “It can’t go on like this,” Muchitsch demanded on Ö1 for a clear announcement towards Doskozil. Sending messages to each other in public is not worthy of social democracy, he said.
Burgenland SPÖ state manager Roland Fürst explained to the APA: “We do not comment on the content, because we abide by what others in the party demand of us.”
Construction/timber union man Muchitsch, who has long been regarded as ambitious and who is also the social spokesman for the SPÖ in parliament, will succeed metalworker Rainer Wimmer, who is retiring, as head of the FSG in June 2023. He holds a post that traditionally belongs to the major trade unions such as the metalworkers, which, after several mergers, now operate as a manufacturing union.
Doskozil put Rendi-Wagner’s cane in the window
An internal power struggle has been raging within the SPÖ for some time – this time between the Red Party leader Pamela Rendi-Wagner and Doskozil. The latest buzz was a study published in November by the SPÖ Burgenland. It called into question Doskozil’s federal political potential. The result: with a chancellor candidate Doskozil, the SPÖ would reach 32 percent nationally and under Rendi-Wagner 27 percent.
The former ORF general director Gerhard Zeiler responded in an interview with Puls 24 with sharp words towards the mayor of Burgenland. “There are few scenarios in which I can imagine not being a member of the SPÖ anymore, but a chancellor candidate or a party leadership by Doskozil would be such a case,” the media manager stressed three weeks ago.
