The incumbent and the former interior minister in a duel of words: Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) claims he is more successful than Herbert Kickl (FPÖ) – despite 100,000 asylum applications in Austria. But what is now? A fact check.
It was an attack that Kickl could not bear. In the “Krone” interview, Karner described him as a “foambrawler” because after a year, Interior Minister Kickl, there were 26,500 asylum seekers in basic care. In comparison, Karner lists only 24,000 people who are entitled to asylum in basic care. The FPÖ immediately counterattacked. Asylum applications fell under Kickl in 2018 to under 14,000, while there are now more than 100,000. The “Krone” asked asylum expert Lukas Gahleitner for an analysis of the complex matter.
