The turquoise-green coalition will go on retreat at the start of the new working year. In Mauerbach, Lower Austria, a package will be put together on Tuesday and Wednesday for the faster expansion of renewable energy sources. In addition, the new criminal law on corruption should be presented.
On Tuesday, the coalition will receive information from experts: the boss of the Budget Council, Christoph Badelt, the head of the Austrian energy company Michael Strugl and the secretary general of the Ministry of Defense, Arnold Kammel, will give presentations. Then the ministries will have to work on their projects in the coming months. A press conference is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.
In any case, the focus is on the energy supply. Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler (Greens) announced an “accelerator package for the expansion of renewables”, which should also include the reform of the environmental impact assessment (EIA amendment). The aim is to become more independent “at top speed”, especially from Russian oil and gas. Penal reform on corruption, in turn, should close the loopholes revealed in the aftermath of the Ibiza scandal.
