Cándido Conde-Pumpido, elected the new President of the Constitutional Court

The progressive magistrate has won six out of eleven votes in the plenary session held this Wednesday in the Constitutional Court, compared to the five reaped by María Luisa Balaguer.

The Progressive Magistrate Candid Count-Pumpido was newly elected today President of the Constitutional Court (TC). According to legal sources, she outvoted the also progressive María Luisa Balaguer – by a small margin of six votes instead of five – in the plenary session that took place this Wednesday in the court of guarantees.

Conde-Pumpido has received the unanimous support of the other five magistrates of the progressive sector, including that of María Luisa Segoviano whose vote was the great unknown, while Balaguer added his and that of the four conservatives.

The Progressive Magistrate was also appointed in the vote Immaculate Montalban What vice president of the body (six votes to five), so the progressive bloc is assigned both positions, breaking the unwritten rule according to which the presidency corresponded to the majority sector and the vice presidency to the minority. In fact, the conservative bloc had nominated Ricardo Enríquez, the top and oldest magistrate, who won five votes.

Cándido Conde-Pumpido and Inmaculada Montalbán respectively replace Pedro González-Trevijano and Juan Antonio Xiol, who left their positions last Monday, along with Antonio Narváez and Santiago Martínez-Vares, with the partial renewal of the TC, which had been pending since 12 June.

Of the four new magistrates, the former Minister of Justice Juan Carlos Field and the former High Office of Moncloa Laura Diez, were proposed by the Spanish government. For their part, María Luisa Segoviano, former president of the Social Chamber of the Supreme Court (TS), and César Tolosa, hitherto president of the Contentious-Administrative Chamber of the TS, were nominated by the General Council for the Judiciary (CGPJ ) .
