“Isolate Russia” – Kiev campaigns for more support from Austria

Date:

On Tuesday, members of the Austrian National Council discussed the situation in the war zone with members of the Ukrainian parliament via video conference. Ukrainian committee chairman Oleksandr Merezhko called for wider Austrian support for Ukraine. He does not believe that Austria’s neutrality will prevent arms supplies to Ukraine or other technical goods.

SPÖ club president Pamela Rendi-Wagner chaired the meeting with Merezhko as chairman of the foreign policy committee in the National Council. Representatives from all parties took part on the Austrian side. The ambassador of Ukraine Vasyl Chymynets was also present.

“completely isolate Russia”
According to Merezhko, Ukraine is very grateful for the humanitarian aid provided, but it also needs military, technical and political support. Merezhko also urged Russia to be completely isolated and excluded from all international organizations.

A “terrorist regime” should not be a member of an organization like the OSCE (Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe), he said, proposing to leave Ukraine if Russia was not excluded. According to Merezhko, the OSCE has failed in the current conflict, has not contributed to securing the peace and, in his view, is “dead”.

According to Merezhko, an important support for Ukraine would be to join the EU as soon as possible. After all, Ukraine would also defend Europe, he said. Russian President Vladimir Putin is afraid of European solidarity.

Rendi-Wagner: “Prospects for peace are still lacking”
According to a broadcast, Rendi-Wagner emphasized in her opening statement that the National Council strongly condemned Russian aggression against Ukraine. The war “led to unspeakable suffering and there is still no prospect of peace,” said the committee chairman. Members of the National Council stressed the importance of international organizations such as the Vienna-based OSCE, which includes both Ukraine and Russia.

“It is important to keep communication channels open, even in conflict, especially through international organizations such as the OSCE. These channels are a prerequisite for paving the way for future negotiations and for peace,” said Rendi-Wagner. Against the background of the ongoing struggle against the Ukrainian population, she called for further humanitarian aid from the Austrian federal government after the discussion.
