“ZiB 2” interview – Kickl: “Climate policy is simply overwhelming”

Date:

According to his own statement, FPÖ leader Herbert Kickl understands the concerns of climate activists, but not their actions. Austria’s climate policy is already “outrageous” and follows an ideology, he said in the “ZiB 2” interview on Wednesday evening. The government is called upon to defuse the situation.

“I think there is a huge problem with this whole situation,” the FPÖ federal chairman said in relation to climate activists. The situation threatens to escalate. As examples he mentioned that the protest actions would not proceed in an orderly manner and that many in the population would feel terrorized. Traffic jams as a result of actions are also aimed at the climate issue.

Sustainable energy sources anyway
On the climate issue, however, he admitted that it was absolutely right to switch to sustainable energy sources. The way this is done is counterproductive. The way the turquoise-green federal government is running it endangers “our prosperity, our economy, our jobs and so on.” They try to “implement an ideology by hook or by crook”, which meets with little understanding among the population, exhausted by inflation and other crises. “That even puts off people who want to contribute to climate protection.” Instead, the causes should be worked on.

fortress for protection
Other topics discussed with Armin Wolf included immigration, the election campaign in Lower Austria and Kickl as future Chancellor. For example, Wolf put forward the slogan of the “Austrian fortress”, which has been heard a lot lately. Kickl explained this by saying it was an antonym for “asylum magnet”. A fortress stands for protection and security. The gates could be opened and closed at will. Austria should be withdrawn as an “asylum location”. The leader of the Liberal Party said this word several times, including slips of the tongue.

In the state elections on January 29 in Lower Austria, the FPÖ is aiming for the position of governor together with top candidate Udo Landbauer. Unlike incumbent governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner (ÖVP), this is not a discontinued model, but a “political hope for the future”. In the federal government, Kickl remains determined to become chancellor. When asked which parties should be able to do that, he replied with a comparison with one of his predecessors: “With Strache it was the same statement: ‘Nobody wants Strache, it’s all too extreme.'” There were always discussions about that. possible government constellations – not only with the ÖVP, but also with the SPÖ, which, however – then and now – “had no particularly decisive executives”.

Would Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen even swear in Kickl as Chancellor? The FPÖ leader recently spoke to him and learned that he had only been dismissed as interior minister at the suggestion of the then chancellor. Van der Bellen gave no other explanation. If he became chancellor, he would abolish the feminine form of the national anthem, the FPÖ chairman explained in response to a question. “You give me a good idea,” he told Wolf.
