Sánchez and Macron meet in Barcelona to forge an alliance that will strengthen Spanish-French cooperation

Date:

The appointment was marked by the protest mobilizations the independence movement has called to claim the process is still alive.

Pedro Sánchez and Emmanuel Macron met today in Barcelona to sign the Treaty of Friendship between Spain and France, an agreement that aims to intensify cooperation between the two countries. The meeting has provoked the backlash of the independence movement that has mobilized thousands of people to claim that the “process” is still alive.

The treaty they will sign today will provide a legal framework for the bilateral relationship between the two countries and will, among other things, establish a Bilateral Defense and Security Council and a working group on migration issues. Spain is requesting the reopening of all border posts that are still closed, including five in Euskal Herria. France, however, makes the reopening dependent on the progress of that working group.

Topics on the European agenda will also be discussed, including the future green energy corridor H2Med.

mobilizations

The independence movement has responded to this meeting in Barcelona with mobilizations and protests. ANC, Òmnium Cultural and the Council of the Republic have called for mobilization in Montjuic, a short distance from the National Museum of Art of Catalonia, where the summit is taking place.

Since early morning, thousands of people have protested under the slogan “Nothing is over here!” to claim in this way that the “process” is still alive.
