On Thursday, the Vienna ÖVP’s New Year’s reception took place at the Academy of Sciences. City party chairman Karl Mahrer conjured up ‘more normalcy for Vienna’. Because a lot of what happens in the federal capital isn’t normal, you just got used to it, he said. Among other things, he criticized the SPÖ’s “excessive welcome culture” and denounced “mismanagement” or traffic light couples, among other things.
About 500 guests followed the Vienna ÖVP’s call to the New Year’s event, which was held under the motto “More courage. For Vienna”. In his speech, Mahrer first asked those present to follow him on a journey into the past.
‘Streets characterized by vacancy and neglect’
20 or 25 years ago there were a few empty shops. “Today entire streets are characterized by vacancy and neglect.” The Brunnenmarkt in its current form is also a thorn in his side. There is “not a single Austrian grandstand there anymore”, he complained.
“Exaggerated welcome culture”
Mahrer also stated that people had become accustomed to classes where no child spoke German. The SPÖ’s “extraordinarily hospitable culture” has led to immigration being “completely out of control”. He also mentioned that Mayor Michael Ludwig (SPÖ) single-handedly awarded Wien Energie €1.4 billion. Billions were “juggled” in the company. The centers for adult education have also been “a restructuring case for years”. The city burns away the tax money “like a chandelier”.
“Gender and awake unculture”
“I’m telling you, that’s not normal, and it can’t and shouldn’t become normal.” You should not be lulled by “assumed normalcy”. Normality is “the solution to many problems”. The Viennese ÖVP boss also saw other phenomena in the cityscape. “We need to stop the gendered and awake non-culture that has invaded here.” As examples he mentioned “gender stars, traffic light pairs or rainbow protection paths”.
The ÖVP is, he assured, the “biggest and most constructive” opposition party. We stand for a silent majority policy. Mahrer’s predecessor as city party chairman, Gernot Blümel, had once invited Turkish officials to give a keynote speech – namely in October 2021 at the Schottenstift.
Blümel resigned in December and former National Council member Karl Mahrer took over the top post. He also moved to City Hall, where he now serves as a non-executive city councillor.
