The arrival of the Fien squall in the Iberian Peninsula has kept all of Spain on alert since this Tuesday saw the rains, snow at low levels, cold temperatures and strong winds intensify.
All bad weather conditions that almost turn driving into an extreme sport. That is why the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) has wanted to offer a series of guidelines for taking our car in unfavorable conditions.
Facing high winds on the highway can be complicated, but with some practical safety tips you can reduce the risk when you have no choice but to take your car.
The DGT indicates that the most important thing is to slow down in areas of extreme wind and increase the safety distance significantly, since if we lose control at any point, we will have no other vehicles around.
Likewise, the organism recommends using short gears for more power and
hold the handlebars firmly all the time.
The ideal is to drive smoothly and, above all, to be extremely careful when overtaking, bridges and tunnel exits.
The DGT also reminds us that if the wind blows from the driver’s side, when we encounter other vehicles, the ’empty effect’ causes a dangerous lateral displacement that we must avoid.
If the wind blows from the right side of the car, that of the co-driver, overtaking a bulky vehicle can make maneuvering difficult due to the frightening ‘screen effect’.
With an illustration, the organization wants to make motorists aware that they have no choice but to travel by road in this time of unfavorable temporary circumstances.
