The Vitoria-Gasteiz City Council has approved a motion urging the Basque government to strengthen the environmental protection of the Montes de Vitoria and to Azazeta wind farm project.
EH Bildu’s initiative has continued with the other two opposition groups, Elkarrekin and PP. The parties that support the municipal council, PNV and PSE-EE, have voted against.
This motion urges the Basque government to implement all the necessary procedures for the declaration of the Montes de Vitoria Natural Park, so that both the Special Protection Areas in force in this environment and the high-value areas left out of the special protection area, obtain the “necessary and deserved” certificate of a natural park.
The Azazzeta wind farm, promoted by the company Aixeindar (formed by the Basque energy entity and Iberdrola) in the municipalities of Alegría-Dulantzi, Iruraiz Gauna, San Millán/Donemiliaga, Arraia Maeztu and Bernedo, provides for 8 wind turbines and a capacity generation of 40 MW.
The Basque government reported last Tuesday that it will soon approve the environmental impact assessment of this wind farm, which will be positive with a series of corrective measures, mainly to ensure the protection of birds, which will have to be taken into account in the drafting of the implementation project These measures include installing bird approach systems so that autoproducers can be stopped, for example during times of migration.
