Opposition Angry – U Committee Ends Without Further Investigation

Date:

After a hard battle between the factions, there is now at least one meeting of the ÖVP’s investigative committee. On Friday, the chairman of the National Council enabled a rulebook meeting for today, which has been running since 4 p.m. However, due to legal deadlines, further investigations are unlikely.

Previously, the SPÖ and ÖVP in particular had accused each other of blocking – which did not change after the presidential elections. Contrary to expectations, the chairman of the National Council, Wolfgang Sobotka (ÖVP), convened a special chairman after no agreement was reached between parliamentary groups for a final meeting of the rules on Thursday.

The green light was given on Friday afternoon. ÖVP representative Christian Stocker was skeptical about the course of events. He did not consider the subsequent meeting of the Rules of Procedure unnecessary. In the direction of the SPÖ, however, he said: “Now the lazy person will be busy in the evening.”

ÖVP has “successfully prevented” witness summons.
For the deputy head of the SPÖ club Jörg Leichtfried, who represents his parliamentary group in the assembly instead of Jan Krainer, the ÖVP has now “successfully prevented” further witness calls. It is practically too late for further hearings of witnesses in the U-committee. Due to the short term, a summons is no longer possible – the taking of evidence in the University Committee will officially end at the end of this month. NEOS representative Nikolaus Scherak nevertheless hoped for further inquiries.

Greens want to get more requests
In any case, Meri Disoski of the Greens thought it was good that the meeting could go ahead. But she also considers the deadline for further investigations to be practically over. However, your group would like to submit at least two additional evidence requirements on Friday: one on the Vorarlberg Economic Association’s advertising affair and one on the Causa Senior Citizens’ Association. The SPÖ also wants to continue to receive a total of 18 requests.
